20 Ways To Get The Most Out Of Therapy.

Hello friends, this week, a lil listicle. Therapy is class. It’s the bee’s knees, the dogs boll… anyway, here’s 20 things to hold in mind so that you can get the most out of that therapeutic hour. Let me know if you’d add anything.

  1. STRIKE WHILST THE IRON IS COLD

Most of us wait until shit has hit the fan to start therapy. Don’t. The world would look like a very different place if we treated our mental health as something to be maintained, not just fixed.

  2. SET GOALS

Write one - three therapeutic goals or aims and share these early on. What do you want out of the process? What do you want to look at? Where do you want to get to? How can the space serve you best? Get clear with your therapist.

  3. TURN UP, EVEN WHEN YOU CAN’T BE ARSED

Tell your therapist you don’t want to be there. Get in touch with what you’re avoiding. Like going to the gym, having gone feels better than going.

  4. LET GO OF GUILT

You will talk about your parents/caregivers. They will have, in some way, let you down. This is inevitable and it’s not a betrayal to name it and wonder about the impact on you.

  5. THE RELATIONSHIP MATTERS

Therapy is built on the space between us. The relationship is where growth happens, let it teach you, stretch you, hold you. Notice how and when it becomes a microcosm of your relationships outside of therapy.
